The English language has phrases or sentences that cannot be understood literally. Even if you know the meaning of all the words in a phrase and understand all the grammar of the phrase completely, the meaning of the phrase may still be confusing. Many proverbs, informal phrases, and common sayings offer this kind of problem. A phrase or sentence of this type is said to be idiomatic (or simply called an idiom).
In this class, we will learn the meaning, usage, and context of different idioms that Americans use in their everyday expressions.
Learn to use idioms like:
“(as) good as done”
ex. This job is as good as done. It’ll just take another second.
“heart and soul”
ex. Now we are getting to the heart and soul of the matter.
“the lesser of two evils”
ex. I didn’t like either politician, so I voted for the lesser of two evils.
“rope someone into doing something”
ex. I don’t know who roped me into this, but I don’t want to do it.
“wouldn’t dream of doing something”
ex. I’m sure that John wouldn’t dream of complaining to the manager.
and many more…
