Have you ever wondered why Osaka people particularly stick out among other Japanese people? How would people know just by hearing their initial speech that they’re from Osaka? What makes Osaka people unique is their peculiar dialect, associated with their culture and environment.
This is an introductory class to Osaka ben (dialect). Given this class by a native of Osaka, it’ll be somewhat convincing to have a basic instruction of Osaka ben and how to speak like Osaka jin (people). By the end of this course, you’ll have interesting insights of Osaka ben and would be able to distinguish if people are from Osaka.
This class is disigned to focus Osaka ben with its fundamental vocabulary, expressions, intonation, and grammar, etc.. In addition, cultural aspects of Osaka will also be touched a little bit.

1st session – What is Osaka ben (大阪弁-おおさかべん)? What makes it so unique? Cultural aspects. Introduction to Osaka ben: vocabulary(単語-たんご), expressions(表現-ひょうげん), intonation(イントネーション), and grammar(文法-ぶんぽう).
2nd session – intonation and vocabulary(イントネーションと単語-たんご): comparison between Osaka ben vs standard Japanese(大阪弁-おおさかべん vs 標準語-ひょうじゅんご)
3rd session – expressions and grammar(表現-ひょうげん と 文法-ぶんぽう): comparison between Osaka ben vs standard Japanese(大阪弁-おおさかべん vs 標準語-ひょうじゅんご)
4th session – Overall review and application(復習-ふくしゅう と 応用-おうよう)
Desire to learn and understand Osaka ben.
Japanese language knowledge will be helpful as you can compare how Osaka ben is different from the standard Japanese that you have learned, but it’s not an absolute requirement. Everyone is more than welcome to attend the class.
It’s highly recommended to attend the Student Orientation class.
