About Class

This is not a basic course, those who attend must have mastered at least the alphabet before starting this class. This is a full course, we will use the book shown in the photo to the left {Alkitab 1}. This book is used all over the American universities. This course is for serious students only, it is not one time thing, we will meet once a week or more to study from that book. There will be homework, reading, writing, and conversation. You will have to purchase the book for the class from amazon or ebay for about 30$, for any further question or assistance, email me please

Syllabus

Please try to study at least 5 hours per a week for this course.
topics covered in this course:
1- Gender, the definite article, asking questions, subject pronouns, singular and plural, non human plural agreement, nominal phrase
2- Possessive pronouns, edafa, the present tense, negation, verbal phrase, more about questions, noun adjective phrases
3- The infinitive, the root of the verbs, fronted predicate, kan and its sisters, numbers
4- The present, the past and the future tense, awzan and the forms of the verbs.
5- Negation using laisa, ordinal numbers, what time it is?,and object pronouns.
6- Quantifiers, adjective phrase, subject verb agreement, negation of the past tense, anna and its sisters, describing places.
7- Definite and indefinite, the comparative and the superlative, prepositions, the dual and how to form it.
8- Plural of the feminine, the infinitive as a subject or nominative.

Prerequisites

You must have finished my previous course, Alkitab Alasasi Arabic basics and elementary {for serious students only], or Alif Baa book with me or any equivalent

alif baa book deals with the alphabet and very few words, also the position of the word at the beginning, the middle and at the end of the word which i will cover in the course posted 6 months ago

Yem said: Judith, These books are the standard widely used college text books used in US universities to teach Modern Standard Arabic. I have studied a one semester course (first 3-4 chapters only slow course) with this book. The 'Alif Baa' book by the same authors teaches the script first and in that sense a pre-requiisite (book #0) before you get this Book #1. While teaching the alphabet, the Alif Baa book uses vocab words which are helpful when you get to this book. If you have learned script from some other book, you may have to look up the dictionary at the back of the book more often when studying chapter 1, but after that you should be fine. When I studied with this book for a class, I had also learned the script elsewhere. (Though I did buy the Alif Baa book though to consult just in case I need it so I have looked through it). DVD also has Egyptian dialect pronunciation in addition to modern standard arabic. College student textbooks in US tend to be priced a bit higher higher than regular mass market books(captive market) - but it is usually a good investment if you end up learning from them. (No idea if these books are any better/worse than any others!)

This is a great chance for great instruction using a great book. The teacher creates a very comfortable learning atmosphere and is trully dedicated to serving his students even by email in between classes.

I will not be able to attend class on Saturday. My wife's boss died and we must attend her funeral. It will be taking place tomorrow Aug Saturday 8th at 11am. I am keeping up with my studies and already am half way through the alif baa book. I redid the whole book a few times to make sure I master it.

Again I'm extremely sorry and I will be making up for this.
