If writing a good essay for TOEFL seems hopeless because you feel you can’t learn enough grammar or vocabulary in time, this class can provide you with a way to improve your essay right away without learning a lot of new grammar or vocabulary. One of the biggest problems with most essays is organization. No matter how good (or bad) your grammar is, good organization will make your points more clear to the toefl rater, and that alone can improve your score. In this class, I will show you how to write a TOEFL essay using proper structure, including paragraph structure, introductions and conclusions, and topic sentences. You will learn how to focus on a topic in a way appropriate for toefl, and how to make sure your points are on-topic and clear. Most students are able to raise their independent writing score by at least one point after this class. We will focus on the independent writing task (the essay) only.
To benefit from this class you must have at least intermediate level writing skills. If you are not sure whether or not you can benefit from the class, you may send me a writing sample and I will let you know.
This class does not include an evaluation of your writing. If you wish to have your writing evaluated and receive personal feedback on how to improve your score, there is a charge of fifteen US dollars per evaluation (including rewrites).
The class should take about 2 hours, but I have blocked out three in case of technical issues or other interruptions. There will be a break.
