Many college students are afraid of research papers; most, however, simply fear it because they do not know how to approach it. This class is designed to counter this. This class also works for other forms of writing with modification.
SYLLABUS:
This class is meant to discuss the writing process from paper creation to finalization (a misnomer, since a piece of writing is never “finalized”, it can always be improved). Some topics include:
- Choosing a topic – what to write about?
- Thesis: formalizing your topic.
- Research – choosing who to cite.
- How to write an outline
- How to write the essay!
- What to look for on read-through’s.
- Finalizing the essay.
During this class, students will be expected to write the essay. Essays will not be checked, but there will be time (first 15-20 minutes of the session) for questions regarding them.
This class is oriented for English speakers (at least at the level of an American high school student), but a Russian version can be created if there is enough demand (only the spoken part will be in Russian – same materials – but I will translate).
The class is geared towards an academic, term paper-style assignment, but it can work for any form of prose writing (including fiction) with some creativity.

Thank you. posted 6 months ago

I don't see why not. Some of my examples might be a bit more advanced (such as my sample paper that I put up) than what your son might be used to, but I won't mention about anything that might be inappropriate, though perhaps controversial. posted 6 months ago

"In writing an essay in Japanese, a conventional writing structure composed of a threepart (introduction subject conclusion) or four-part organization (introduction development turn conclusion) has been widely instructed. However, no methodology that can help the learners learn how to make up the structure easily yet accurately has been established.
The present paper examines the structure of an essay, and puts forward its new component."
