About Class

Expand your vocabulary beyond textbook English! But be warned: my vocabulary classes aren’t just about explaining new words. Be prepared to experiment with their usage and have conversations with them!

2/1: Financial English
The US market collapsed and decided to take everyone else down with them, but it’s hard to talk about these problems intelligently without the right vocabulary. This class is a mix of technical terms relevant to current financial problems, industry slang, and everyday slang

Sample Vocabulary:
sub-prime
shorting a stock
lemon
dud
derivatives
to hit pay dirt
3-6-3 Rule
The Angelina Jolie Stock Index
Bull/Bear Market
Cherry Picking
Fire Sale
Mom and Pop
Yuppie

2/8: English for Sports fans
While many of the English terms used in sports are used internationally— offsides, penalty, goal, etc— sports fans use a variety of slang terms when discussing the game.

Sample Vocabulary:
big dance
chippy
goon
lose the dressing room
mail it in
puck bunny
throw (someone) under a bus
Hat Trick
Hail Mary
juice
nineteenth hole
quarterback
a tilt

2/15 English to Insult People (or not)
The problem with the internationalization of hip-hop culture is that a lot of its slang is being used incorrectly. This class we go over popular slang terms from urban/gang culture and beyond and when not to use them.

Sample Vocabulary
Shawty (Shortie)
Hoochie-Mama
Bitch
Whore
Slut
Skank
mofo
poseur (poser)
guido
gold digger
Joe Sixpack
Jail bait
street-cred
’Sup
wack
’tard

Marianne said: hehehe :D Yes I get it, very clever! :) And this class is for 18+ because it will be recorded and apparently we can't do that with minors? I'm not sure why, seems to be a legal thing :(  posted 9 months ago
