This is a course for absolute beginners, which means that this is a class geared toward people who have had no experience or formal learning in the Korean language.
This is a four week course. The classes are recorded so that you can go back and listen to the lesson again.
This is a lecture style course. If you want to come on mic and participate, I will give you the opportunity to do so at the end of class. If you’re shy and prefer not to, you don’t have to. At the very least please bring earphones so that you can listen in.
The homework for the class is to go over the lecture notes I give out in class. I do a little review before each class. At the end of class I give small cultural insights or lessons that go hand in hand with the language. There will also be a set of vocabulary for each class.
Each class builds upon the previous class, so if you miss a class, you will need to do some catching up. I may offer a makeup class for people who missed a class, but for now we’ll see what happens. For those of you who attend all five classes, you will be rewarded with a certificate of completion.
This is a tentative syllabus. The syllabus may change, depending on how much material we go over for each class.
Here’s what you can expect:
Lesson #1- July 4 : Consonants, Vowels Diphthongs (Very Important and tricky)
I have a special way to help you remember these tricky diphthongs- which are absolutely necessary to be literate in Korean.
Here’s what we are going to do:
1a) Practice reading/pronouncing Korean letters and words
1b) Practice combining letters to create words
1c) Listening to the differences between similar sounding consonants and vowels
This class will involve involve listening and reading comprehension. You will get the opportunity to participate directly in this class
Week 2 – July 11 : Numerals Part 1
We are going to go over:
2a) Various counters for people, things, animals
2b) How to tell time Part 1
2c) How to express age Part 1
Reading and listening comprehension will be key, and for those who want it, I will allow some opportunities to use the mic.
Week 3 – July 18 : Numerals Part 2 (Yes, there’s more to Korean numberals that you MUST know to function in daily society) Here’s what you can expect:
3a) Months/Days/Years (some tricky pronunciation issues here, not to mention several ways to express this, which we’ll go over in class)
3b) More important and NECESSARY counters
3c) Expressing Age/Time Part 2
