First off, it’s not as simple as it sounds. We’ll be going over 12 ways to count 12 separate things in Japanese (and there are more, but we’ll only cover the more basic ones here today).
Here’s what we’ll learn how to count:
-Normal Counting 1-10
-Days in a Month
-Hours and minutes
-Counting Age
-Counting People
-Counting Long, Cylindrical Objects
-Counting Thin Objects
-Counting Bound Objects
-Counting Small Animals
-Counting Small (round) Objects
-Counting Number of Times
-Counting things That Don’t Have Special Counters
Prerequisites:
-Some Japanese knowledge preferred, but not required
-The ability to read hiragana preferred, but not required (I’ll provide roman lettering as well)
-Ability to count from 1-10 normally, provided below (at least bring a cheat sheet along, if you don’t know them)
1: ichi
2: ni
3: san
4: shi / yon
5: go
6: roku
7: shichi / nana
8: hachi
9: ku / kyuu
10: juu
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I’ll be providing a copy of the presentation to download for your further study (as we’ll be rushing through all these over the course of the hour).
Come early for some pre-class fun / contests!
