About Class

[THIS IS A CATCH UP CLASS]

For those that would like to address all of the topics in order, this is an ideal opportunity to re-visit one of the first three lessons. The lesson we go through will be decided by vote at the start of the lesson.

I will be thoroughly explaining one grammatical point per class. At the beginning of the class I will give the option of three grammar points from the 10 lessons I have prepared that we could go through and explain it thoroughly with plenty of examples. This vote will take place at the start of each lesson.

In the ‘Beginner’ series I will be using romaji in addition to ひらがな, カタカナ and 漢字. I will assume no previous knowledge other than my previous classes and I will understand that some people have attended the class for a ‘brush up’ and some will be completely new to the grammatical concept.

Rather than approach Japanese grammar the English way and try to cram our English way of thinking about grammar into explanations about Japanese grammar, I will explain the grammatical point in terms of how it works and what it means to the Japanese. This means that when you come to use it in conversation you will require no ‘thinking time’ and it should just flow naturally, as you know how and why the grammatical point works.

Please treat this as a course, yet one that you can ‘dip into’. Sure, some lessons are reliant on others but others can be enjoyed completely independent of the rest. Also, even if you are familiar with the grammatical point – why not come along for the 15 minutes and see if my approach can refresh it in your memory and ensure that it really sticks?

The lecture part of the lesson will always be less than 15 minutes long. However, I will always stay around for an extra 15 minutes to correct examples that I ask you to come up with and to answer any questions you may have. Of course, I will also be contactable by email should you need a bit of extra help. And, I’m available for one-to-one tutoring at very reasonable rates should you need a little extra push in the right direction.

If there is a grammatical point that I have not covered in these 10 lessons that you would like looked at – please email me and I will consider including it in the ‘Adv-Beginner’ or ‘Intermediate’ series that I will be teaching in September.

Even if this is is the only class you attend using the SuperPass, you will be making a saving of at least $52 on the published price. When attending all 10 lessons. You may of course choose to attend just one class for $9 to try it out. Don’t forget, I will be repeating this series of classes for a while so you can re-visit any grammatical point at your own leisure as many times as you need to.

Prerequisites

Please do not think of these lessons as an introduction to the Japanese language – there are plenty of those kind of classes here on EduFire. Rather, this is a grammar course. Although somebody who has never been taught grammar before would learn much from these lessons; an hour or two of private study learning what the language is about, the writing systems and some basic vocabulary would mean that you will get far more from these classes.

That said, anybody is welcome to attend, regardless of ability and I really will pitch these classes to all levels. I will also be happy to answer all manner of questions, from the very simple to the more complex. Do not let your lack of Japanese knowledge prevent you from taking advantage of this course.
