In these classes, you will learn about nine countries that are located in the region of Southern Africa—South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Comoros. You will learn about the region’s history, cultures, and economies.
I. Physical Geography
A. Southern Africa’s main physical feature is a large plateau with plains, rivers, and mountains.
B. The climate and vegetation of Southern Africa is mostly savanna and desert.
C. Southern Africa has valuable mineral resources.
II. History & Culture
A. Southern Africa’s history began with hunter-gatherers, followed by great empires and European settlements.
B. The cultures of Southern Africa are rich in different languages, religions, customs, and art.
III. Southern Africa Today
A. South Africa ended apartheid and now has a stable government and strong economy.
B. Some countries of Southern Africa have good resources and economies, but several are still struggling.
C. Southern African governments are responding to issues and challenges such as drought, disease, and environmental destruction.
