About Class

Thank you for your interest!

This is an overview and orientation for the course Intermediate Japanese with Wren. We will go over the scheduled lessons, and I will answer to any questions regarding this course. If you are interested in how this course works, and have never attended my previous courses, I highly recommend you to attend this orientation session. Note the different time from the regular course time! (this orientation will start 30min later and is 30 min long!)

Thank you for your interest in “Intermediate Japanese with Wren” course!
Please read all of the following, and sign up for class if it fits your interest and needs of Japanese language instruction. If you have any specific questions not addressed here or during the orientation on 4/12, or need more clarification, please directly send me a message through eduFire.

Style of class

We will be using articles written in Japanese and other audio/video materials for lesson content. Materials will be from both on and off-line. Depending on the topic, I may send materials in advance for pre-class preparation. The class will be lecture format and students are expected to participate through the chat function. I will speak in Japanese at least 50% of the class time. Instruction will be in both Japanese and English.

Topics of articles will include, but will not be limited to:

• Current events with a Japanese point of view
• Arts & culture, both current and traditional
• Japanese traditions, history, and an explanation on values behind it

We will go over the following in class:

• Key vocabulary in the article(s)
• Basic sentence structure and grammar used in the article(s)
• Practice creating sentences using new vocabulary and grammar
• Overall article and topic Q & A and discussion

Target students for Intermediate Japanese with Wren are:

• interested in learning Japanese
• those who have studied Japanese for 100hours or more (see requirements below)
• interested in participating in the learning process of the whole class
• interested in learning about multiple aspects of Japan
• those who would like to review their knowledge attained through study using the Japanese text book “Genki” Ι and ΙΙ.

Prerequisites & requirements for attending this class:

• You can read and write all hiragana and katakana
• You know/can recognize basic kanji (100 or more)
• You know basic grammar (ex. particles, tenses, basic conjugation of verbs, etc, min. JLPT 4 level and above)
• Have studied Japanese for 100h or more
• You are able to attend 80% of the entire course
• You will be on time for class and stay for 90% of the class time
• You communicate to me & skip classes you are not able to attend at least 24h (my time: EST USA) in advance, or do not register/drop the course if you cannot attend 80% of the entire course
• You are cordial and respectful of your classmates and teacher, both in and out of class
• You write to me with 1) your interest in studying Japanese, 2) plans on how you want to use your Japanese if you have any (ex. study abroad in Japan), and 3)your level and experience of Japanese prior to signing up if you have not attended any of my previous classes. You can write to me in Japanese or English.

I/this course will NOT:

• Use romaji
• Focus on translation
• Focus on conversation (students will not have mike rights)
• Send materials for classes you have not attended/paid for
• Go over missed materials except for in-class reviews of previous material
Happen without a minimum of 3 students
