About Class

If you’ve “got it” then use it!!
Come and practice your Japanese at my Dojo(道場). We’ll use Japanese sentences to learn grammar & vocab, and practice creating sentences in this class. Your participation is KEY!

Please read all of the following, and sign up for class if it fits your interest and needs of Japanese language instruction. If you have any specific questions not addressed here or need more clarification, please directly send me a message through eduFire.

Style of class

We will be using articles written in Japanese and other audio/video materials for lesson content. Materials will be from both on and off-line. Depending on the topic, I may send materials in advance for pre-class preparation. The class will be lecture format and students are expected to participate through the chat and occasionally through the mike depending on the number of attendees. I will try to speak in Japanese at least 50% of the class time, but will adjust depending on the participants’ comprehension level. Instruction will be in both Japanese and English.

Topics of articles will include, but will not be limited to:

• Current events with a Japanese point of view
• Arts & culture, both current and traditional
• Japanese traditions, history, and an explanation on values behind it

Past lesson topics include:

ジャズ喫茶へ行こう!(Let’s go to a “Jazz Kissa (Cafe)”!)
大仏比較 (Giant Buddha (statue) comparisons)
江戸の履き倒れ("Edokko" (Tokyoites) going broke for “Footwear”)
逆チョコ?!(Opposite “Chocholate-giving?!”)
花見露天、最高!(Outdoor “Cherry-Blossom-Viewing” hotspring baths – Ahh)
秋祭りへ行こう!(Let’s go to a Fall (harvest) Festival)
ヤクザ入門(Yakuza(Japanese mafia)101)
日欧幽霊比較(Western/Japanese Ghost comparisons)
日本流:風邪の治し方(How to cure a cold: Japanese style)
and Much more!!

We will go over the following in class:

• Key vocabulary in the article(s)
• Basic sentence structure and grammar used in the article(s)
• Practice creating sentences using new vocabulary and grammar
• Overall article and topic Q & A and discussion
