Simple Present Tense For Beginner ESL Students

The simple present tense describes actions that happen every day.

  • I brush my teeth.
  • I go to work.
  • I drink coffee.

The simple present tense also describes actions that occur on a regular basis.

  • I go to church every Sunday.
  • We dance every Friday night.
  • She studies English every Monday and Wednesday evenings.

To form the simple present tense:

  • Use the base form of the verb.

Singular

  • First Person - I eat.
  • Second Person - You eat.
  • Third Person - He, She, It eats. *

Plural

  • First Person - We eat.
  • Second Person - You eat.
  • Third Person - They eat.
  • Note: Third person singular - add "s" to the end of the verb.
