Present Continuous Tense For Beginning ESL Students

The present continuous tense (also called the present progressive tense) describes actions that are happening right now or are continuing (they have not stopped).

I am brushing my teeth. 

I am going to work. 

I am drinking coffee. 

 

What is the difference between "I brush my teeth" and "I am brushing my teeth"? 

 

I brush my teeth. When? Morning? Evening?

I am brushing my teeth. When? Now.

 

I go to work? When? Monday? Tuesday? Every day?

I am going to work? When? Now.

 

To form the present continuous tense:

present continuous tense = present tense of verb to be + base form of the verb + ing

 

Singular

First Person - I am eating. 

Second Person - You are eating. 

Third Person - He, She, It is eating.  

 

Plural

First Person - We are eating. 

Second Person - You are eating. 

Third Person - They are eating.
