Math is a beautiful language. Math a language? Yes. A language is a set of symbols that expresses thoughts. Mathematical formulae are sentences and paragraphs. What are some of the different types of math?

Algebra

Algebra allows us to work with the unknown. It is the branch of mathematics where symbols, usually letters of the alphabet, represent unknown numbers. (encarta.msn.com/dictionary_1861584630/algebra.html) 

The name is from the Arabic word al-jabr which means reunion. There are many types of algebra. These include: elementary algebra, abstract algebra, linear algebra, universal algebra, and computer algebra.

Geometry

Geometry is the study of shapes. Geometry may be thought of as the science of space. Geometry describes and relates experiences that involve space. (encarta.msn.com/encnet/refpages/search.aspx?q=geometry)

The name is from the combination of two Greek words: geo – earth and metria – measure. 

 

Trigonometry

Trigonometry deals with the relationships between the sides and angles of triangles and with the properties and applications of the trigonometric functions of angles. (encarta.msn.com/encnet/refpages/search.aspx?q=trigonometry)

Its name derives from two Greek words: trigōnon (triangle) and metron (measure).

 

Calculus

Calculus deals with change. It is concerned with the study of such concepts as the rate of change of one variable quantity with respect to another, etc. (encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761568582/Calculus_(mathematics).html) 

Its name derives from the Latin word calculus which is a small stone used for counting. There are different types of calculus. Some of these are:  differentiation calculus, integral calculus,  vector calculus, and  multivariable calculus.
