In Spanish, verbs are based on personal pronouns and are much more easily formed than most other languages.
To better demonstrate this, let's introduce an infinitive because infinitives are the basis for all verbs in Spanish.
hablar - to speak
Conjugating a verb basically means to put into a new form in order to fit a context.
Conjugating hablar in the present tense is quite easy. We must use the 6 personal pronoun forms. They are:
Yo : I
Tú : You (Informal)
Usted/Él/Ella : You (Formal)/He/She
Nosotros : We
Vosotros : You (Plural Informal)
Ustedes/Ellos/Ellas : You (Plural Formal)/They(Masculine)/They(Feminine)
With those in mind, we are half way towards conjugating a verb. The only other part we need in order to understand conjugation is the infinitive ending.
The infinitive ending in hablar is -ar.
hablar
tocar
decir
venir
comer
beber
With this information, we can conjugate a verb. For the regular verbs ending in -ar in Spanish, the conjugation is as follows.
Yo ...-o
Tú ...-as
Usted/Él/Ella ...-a
Nosotros ...-amos
Vosotros ...-áis
Ustedes/Ellos/Ellas ...-an
The conjugations of hablar would be:
hablo
hablas
habla
hablamos
habláis
hablan
Notice: I did not include the pronoun with the verb. This is because, in Spanish, you do not have to specify the subject all of the time in sentences because it is understood with its corresponding conjugation.
It is appropriate to say, "Hablo español y francés."
However, it is not always appropriate to say, "Habla español y francés" because there are many possible subjects for the conjugation "habla".
