Jim said: The Berlitz, or Direct method, was extremely useful in a day and age when general learning standards did not include the levels of fluency many students aspire to today. Berlitz was able to teach a lot of people the basics of different languages very quickly, but the majority of his students were never able to get beyond a certain point of mastery in the language. It was this, more than anything, that cause the Berlitz schools to close their doors worldwide.
Joly's work remains incredibly relevant today in teacher-to-student communication, but he was never able to codify his work and teach teachers a method of speaking to students.
