I bet many of you out there has problem/s with computers that still unsolved and from thousands of members here, there could be an EXPERT for such. I am using Windows Vista since last March ’08, (former with XP crushed) and not realizing how much incompatibilities she has. For one, it has no voice for conferencing with yahoo. I am scared to just download a program from unknown website…not unless (maybe) if it was recommended. Second, the sudden crashing of windows, for some reason,.. is annoying and frustrating especially when you are caught in the middle of your work. My connection is not a problem though, …. at 12.4mbps with DSL. Does anybody out there could lend a hand to someone like me? (^ – ^) To the rest of the readers here, please feel free to tell your own PC experience & problem/s …. it’s nice to help one another… even in your little way, it would surely make a difference. Thank you and have a great day with edufire. Ania. |

Ania, If you had voice capabilities before and only changed from XP to Vista on the same computer, you should still have voice capabilities. Vista has higher memory requirements, though, and that may be why it is crashing for you. I don’t know how much RAM memory you have, but I would not even begin to try to run Vista with less than 2 GB of RAM. I know Microsoft says it will work with less, but it’s not going to work very well that way. |

Let me get this straight. Your PC once had XP and is now using Vista. Okay, well the hardware you currently use was probably designed for XP. As Vista is currently a new Operating system a lot of XP related hardware stops working because the drivers (drivers basically what makes the hardware communicate with software in order for your equiptment to work) are still the old XP drivers, they would have to be updated to work alongside Vista. The problem with that is, vista still needs a lot of updates itself so it can be to the same level as XP is just now. Currently vista isn’t the best of Operating systems to use right now, XP is still my choice. Also, Vista runs on 1GB. It’s hard to pin-point the problem of the crashing, any more details might be able to help. |

This is one of the main reasons I got out of Windows when I did. :) Yes, I still use XP under VirtualBox, but it’s mainly for work purposes, so I do what I need to do, then quickly close it down again. I’ve heard horror stories about non-working hardware when Vista came out, and I wasn’t about to “upgrade” (and I use the term loosely here) any time soon. If some of my hardware doesn’t work, I may not be able to do my job effectively, and that simply won’t do. So I looked into other alternative OSes (and there are plenty.) I think you know which one got my vote by now. :) I currently use Ubuntu 8.04 (yes, I know 8.10 is out now), and I love it. There’s no way I’d go back to Windows, ever. The bloated registry, the blue screens, and all the viruses/trojans/malware just don’t sound appealing to me any more. Plus, Ubuntu is FREE! I don’t have to pay for a license or write down some stupid license key to be able to install it. :) I’m not trying to get anyone to switch. If Windows works for you, great. If Mac is your thing, awesome. Use what you know, but please make sure you know what you use. |
