I certainly don’t know what my last name means, but I was wondering how one can figure that by trying to derive where it’s from.
My last name is Núñez and I know my ancestors are from Spain but they sailed over into Puerto Rico.
I’m not sure how this helps at all…but if anyone could help me figure my last name’s meaning or give me some tips on how to do it myself , I’d be grateful!

And for the fun of it , post what your first or last name means if you know it and what it’s derived from. =]

For example:
My name is Carter.
[i went to a baby name site]

Gender:
Boy [but in this situation i’m a girl so it’s rare i suppose.]

Origin:
English

Meaning:
Transporter of materials

Pronunciation:
(KAR ter)

Form of:
Itself

In English, a “carter” is someone who carries materials in a cart. Carter is a common English surname, though it has recently gained popularity as boys’ first name in English-speaking countries. As a surname, famous bearers include US President Jimmy Carter, actress Helena Bonham Carter and singer Aaron Carter. Carter Braxton signed the US Declaration of Independence. Carter Woodson was the African American historian who founded Black History Month.

Carter is in the Top 10 most popular names of the US states of Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

“Burton” is an Old English name, and means “wall of a fort or village.” It is a very common name in Wales and England.

Hey Mel, “mel” means honey in Portuguese, so it is true, at least here!

Now about my name:
Vanessa is the scientific name of a type of butterflies, so people usually say that Vanessa means butterfly, but it is not that it has this meaning in some language.
When Jonathan Swift wrote the poem Cadenus and Vanessa to his friend (who was called Esther), the name started being used for girls.

The kanji (chinese character) for my name Nao is “exact” or “earnest”.
When you put together the character for my mother’s name and my name, it creates a word “SUNAO” which means “truth, honesty”.

My surname means “Bamboo field”, so I guess I’m a “honest child living in a bamboo field” :)

Mine means crack of dawn. I have to tell you, I was subject to hours of agony in school just because of that phrase!

I prefer to use the term: light of day, glistening onto the golden sands of the beach, whilst gently gliding across the cool ocean waves on a midsummers day.

But no….everybody remembers crack of dawn. :D

(I’m changing my name to Abdul or Mel) ;)

hahaha pick Mel! ;) Short & sweeeeeeeet (literally), you won’t be subjected to hours of agony!
I guarantee you. (Basically cause none of my friends have actually bothered to find out the meaning of my name so…technically I’m safe!)

But Dawn’s a sweet name really! (:

Mrs Carter ! Was your post edited twice ???

Núñez = son of Núño
Núño = ninth < from the latin NONIUS derivation of NONUS “ninth” contracted form of NOVENUS “ninth”. The name may be explained for a baby born in full day (at noon) because it was a good token. The PARCAE in Rome are the three goddesses of destiny : NONA “ninth” gives birth like BHRAMA in India, DECIMA “tenth” sustains life like VISHNU and MORTA “dead” kills like ŚIVA.
In latin NONIUS would be “devoted to NONA the goddess of birth”.

My names are explained with my profile. It’s sometimes difficult to know one’s names meaning but I think it is satisfactory because it’s a kind of discovery of oneself. Nonetheless I do not think that a name gives a special nature to a man. It’s a mere identity ticket. Especially when you know that you can not choose your name. I think a modern society should give the natural right to choose one’s name, let’s say, when you are mature. Something like the right to vote or to drive a car.

To the person who said people should choose their own name.

In theory, that sounds like a good idea. However, how exactly do you define someone as mature? By age or mentality? Surely by that means there is some people who could reach 30 and never be mature.

Giving children names is a must do, and if people hate their names, they can always get it changed.

On that note though, I have a few chinese friends in University. What I found out was, the Chinese like to try fit in, because coming to Scotland they feel very alienated. Therefore they choose names to try and make it easier for us.

An example. I met a girl who went by the alias “Nancy”, I thought about it, and thought maybe she had western relatives. Turns out her real name was Xiao Zhou but she wanted a name people could pronounce. She was also surprised I pronounced her name correctly first time. :D
