I certainly don’t know what my last name means, but I was wondering how one can figure that by trying to derive where it’s from. And for the fun of it , post what your first or last name means if you know it and what it’s derived from. =] For example: Gender: Origin: Meaning: Pronunciation: Form of: In English, a “carter” is someone who carries materials in a cart. Carter is a common English surname, though it has recently gained popularity as boys’ first name in English-speaking countries. As a surname, famous bearers include US President Jimmy Carter, actress Helena Bonham Carter and singer Aaron Carter. Carter Braxton signed the US Declaration of Independence. Carter Woodson was the African American historian who founded Black History Month. Carter is in the Top 10 most popular names of the US states of Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. |

Mine means crack of dawn. I have to tell you, I was subject to hours of agony in school just because of that phrase! I prefer to use the term: light of day, glistening onto the golden sands of the beach, whilst gently gliding across the cool ocean waves on a midsummers day. But no….everybody remembers crack of dawn. :D (I’m changing my name to Abdul or Mel) ;) |
|
|
hahaha pick Mel! ;) Short & sweeeeeeeet (literally), you won’t be subjected to hours of agony! But Dawn’s a sweet name really! (: |

My names are explained with my profile. It’s sometimes difficult to know one’s names meaning but I think it is satisfactory because it’s a kind of discovery of oneself. Nonetheless I do not think that a name gives a special nature to a man. It’s a mere identity ticket. Especially when you know that you can not choose your name. I think a modern society should give the natural right to choose one’s name, let’s say, when you are mature. Something like the right to vote or to drive a car. |

To the person who said people should choose their own name. In theory, that sounds like a good idea. However, how exactly do you define someone as mature? By age or mentality? Surely by that means there is some people who could reach 30 and never be mature. Giving children names is a must do, and if people hate their names, they can always get it changed. On that note though, I have a few chinese friends in University. What I found out was, the Chinese like to try fit in, because coming to Scotland they feel very alienated. Therefore they choose names to try and make it easier for us. An example. I met a girl who went by the alias “Nancy”, I thought about it, and thought maybe she had western relatives. Turns out her real name was Xiao Zhou but she wanted a name people could pronounce. She was also surprised I pronounced her name correctly first time. :D |
