Financial crises, terrorist attacks, violent anti-government protests?

Why are these militants in Mumbai resorting to violence and harming innocent tourists?
Why do the protesting people in Thailand have to close the major airports in Bangkok, stranding thousands of passengers?

Why must people be so selfish in thought and deed?

It’s just something that has been bothering me after I watched news footages of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and terrible protests in Thailand.

Er….What does innocence mean ?

If I am a tourist with my pocket full with banknotes and if I visit a country spending my time and my money in luxurious hostels when I know that the real population is living in harsh conditions, am I really innocent ?
No ! La vida es mucho dura !
I try to be politically correct

Well, I guess if you are going with the intent of doing work, there’s really nothing wrong and you are innocent. And where is India going to get income/money from if not for the pocket full of banknotes tourists?

Then again, many of these people were intentionally killed to instill fear in the rest of the tourists and the people of India. Those people were just being very selfish to kill many tourists there simply because they wanted their territory back. What has that territory-issue got to do with these tourists?

To answer your question Patrick :

in⋅no⋅cence
- freedom from legal or specific wrong; guiltlessness
- simplicity; absence of guile or cunning; naiveté.
- lack of knowledge or understanding.

now what specific wrong have these tourists done to deserve this?

The world is changing drastically, but for the worst or for the better? – You decide.

The world can be a sad place. This story on Gizmodo might help people realize that there are selfish, inconsiderate, rude people everywhere in the world.
I wish people could just realize that they should treat others as they would want to be treated.

Oh dear, that’s a terribly sad story. It was very unfortunate that this incident had to happen to that poor Walmart staff, he was merely doing his job :/

Thanks for sharing Graham! You’re right, I just wished people would “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” And the world would be a much more peaceful place to live in.

This is such a sad story Graham. Some people in this world seem to not have any reality in their lives.

That’s a terrible story though I’m glad you posted it, Graham. Not sure who is to blame (though perhaps looking isn’t the right thing to do), I was just responding to the last line in the article somehow blaming the shoppers. It does seem crazy doesn’t it? But then we have that sort of nonsense here and you can see the corporations advertising whipping people up into a frenzy. Hurry Hurry! Store opens at 5am…. 5am???

If they weren’t hell bent on beating last year’s profits like it actually meant something people wouldn’t respond. And let’s face it, none of us like to admit we’re susceptible to advertising, but we are.

You are certainly right about the media. It is a vicious circle of craziness, especially this time of year.

Well, of course these huge luxurious places attract such attacks and I don’t understand tourists who spend 200 euro per night in Mumbai… as I have said before, I was going to book a flight to Mumbai for the beginning of December last month…. I’m glad I changed to Delhi, January…. of course I would have found it ridiculous to stay in a luxury hotel….by the way just seeing the lobby of such a hotel made me think of a terrorist attack, but I remind you that many who lost their lives where passers by and shop keepers in the streets and in the station, they said they were also going to attack the airport but just couldn’t, so even though there are many things you can blame, I would not consider it deserved for nothing in the world…. by the way such huge hotels also gave many jobs to people….

Marco, you’re right about the press blowing up these things. I mean, although it’s a mega sale and all. Is there really a need for people to rush inside and cause a stampede? Why can’t they act like civilized people and walk into the shop? This line in the article really struck me, “As for the people who did the trampling, well, I hope their cheap crap was worth it. They’ll have to live with the human costs of their deals for the rest of their lives.” I certainly hope it does mean something to those who were in that crowd.

Marged – Wow I’m glad you changed your flight! Actually I wouldn’t advise you to go to any part of India at this point of time. My Japanese friend is actually in Calcutta now and she’s trying to get a flight out. She was apparently supposed to go to Bangkok and then fly to Laos, but she was unaware of the current situation in Bangkok. She’s not exactly very pleased with her trip to India cause she fell ill twice and it’s really not very safe at this point.

Well, as for the point on luxury hotels… You’d probably have heard that one Singaporean lady was shot in that hotel only because she was on a business trip there. She’s a lawyer with a Singapore firm and was asked to put up at that hotel. I guess no one really anticipated such a thing to happen and no one expected it to happen in a 5-star hotel.

It’s really terrible that such things are happening. I felt really upset when I watched the news giving updates on the current political situation in Thailand & the whole terrorist attack thing in Mumbai.

Like what I said in my heading… What is the world coming to? Where is the love?

Is it bad that I don’t watch the news? I saw about 5 minutes of the story in Mumbai and I couldn’t bare to watch anymore. My father thinks I’m naive to the world because I choose not to dwell on the negative. The reason it was done was to instill fear in our hearts…..do we really want them to win?

well, I’m not yet sure of wat I’llbe doing, sooner or later I’ll have to go, India is my second motherland…. I cannot live without it and even if I’ll go in 3 years time will it spare me any risk? I’m so desperate about this actually, as there are some things I really wish to do there. I was in London in 2005 and it was horrible, I don’t want to go through it all once again, still I went back to London twice after that….should I stop doing things I like because of this or not?Are we actually safe anywhere? I was actually planning to avoid malls, markets after a certaim time of the day and on certain dates, festivals etc, even before all this happened, it was creepy as I wasn’t too much surprsed when I heard the news…but anything could happen anywhere… I don’t know.

There are people who are always inclined to believe in fishy stories. Perhaps, this is a cause why much people as some observed are selfish. Right now, there are unobserved events in impenetrable areas in Asia, where fishy folks are harassed because of their bookish beliefs.

It is sad that that the flimsiness of today’s employment causes innocent people to lose their houses; it is even sadder that much of the world lives in shacks instead of houses. Simpler was the life of our predecessors who, living in subsistence farmland, were largely masters of their destiny, even if waiting for natural calamity to strike…. In today’s interdependent societies, one becomes a victim because of the sadism of the next nation, of the next party, of the next neighbour; and this is much harder to take, often impossible to take. Civil disobedience is necessary, terrorism is a most destructive force and inexcusable, but here come in crowd psychology and our evolutionary shortcomings with its dogs-of-war. I am no sociologist or psychologist, but I can state that the most hateful aspect of any nation is its ability to be brainwashed and become victim of fanaticism of any kind… One can also be the victim of the cumulative ineptitude of leaders, or of bad laws, or of bad luck. Putting up walls to keep bad news in or out does not work: it did not work for the Chinese, for the Romans, for the French, for the Russians, and now for the US, or for Israel. Yet, this Earth is finite, energies could be harnessed, both human and technological, and a WORLD-WIDE MINIMUM WAGE could be established right now, and enough doctors produced to care for all sick people, and enough food produced to feed everyone, and enough teachers trained to teach everyone. All it would take is probably a few dozen OBAMAS!…. PS. Obama, don’t let me down!

one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter, as sad as that may be it is as equally unfortunate for the in-no-cence (well put Mel)…… HOWEVER, it is a little irresponsible for the innocent to turn a blind eye (in general). I cannot stand this media, what about the citizens that have died and don’t they get any recognition? (American media is the worst, I think… or are others getting the same????). I cannot bare to comprehend what is broadcasted by the media….. let alone feel the pain of any human suffering considering my harassment free life. What about the things we do not hear of? Can we stand to mention them or their state without first hearing it on the news, or perhaps we are scared because of the black list or in fear of being an outsider in our own home, yet this is exactly what some are fighting for, to be heard and recognized. Please do not take this post out of context, that perhaps I do not feel sad, I am desperate, human suffering has got to end…. wow, even typing it is a defeating feeling the way the world is turning, and having just a small body and voice is a spec in the reality…. it is very sad and there cannot be any giving up for peace, and I guess it starts with one no mater how defeating I guess…………..

The real India :
If you want to know Didier, one of my friends, here is one of his videos. It’s in French, his accent is a northerner one. He went to India in the poorest part of India. You do not need to understand French for understanding the Indian reality concerning poverty.
Mumbay is not a city made up with modernity and prosperity. Mumbay is only a show. Thank You.

as for my experience there isn’t a ‘real India’, India is whatever Indian society has generated…. I don’t like all of the aspects of Indian society either, but you cannot deny that they are there!
