Lately, I’ve been using a Linux machine to access eduFire (via wireless networks). I know the “record function” is not Linux friendly.

I’d be interested in talking with other Linux users. I’m using an Eee PC from ASUS.

I haven’t tried my Eeepc, but my desktop seems to work fine under ubuntu. I only seem to have a little trouble with my webcam.

edufire works nice in Ubuntu GNU/Linux here. Webcam and mic are OK. I have never tested the “share desktop” and the “record session” functionalities.

I’d guess that record session should work not depending on your operating system. But I expect to possbly have some issues with the “share desktop” feature, because I am not sure whether Adobe already supports it in its Connect Pro application (which is what edufire uses to host sessions).

I often use Linux to attend to classes on eduFire, but I still haven’t managed to make my mic and camera work inside the teaching environment, although they work fine in other applications.
I have Ubuntu running on a macbook and on an Acer Aspire One.

@Vanessa, I’m considering installing Ubuntu on my macbook pro to give it a try. Just out of curiosity, why did you install it on yours? What do you use more on your machine, Ubuntu or osX? Did you use bootcamp to install it?

I had bootcamp before with Windows installed on it and then I switched the partition to Linux and installed rEFIt to boot it.
My macbook runs Tiger, not the latest version of MacOS X, so I have several complains about it. Often I need to run a newer version of some application and it won’t work on my version, and also an update I run a few months ago broke my network settings panel and they haven’t fixed it yet, making it very annoying to change the settings (which I do often). I’ve installed Ubuntu on the macbook shortly after they broke it.
But it is hard to say which one I use more, because I use both often.

If you just want to try a linux distro, most of them have a livecd, including ubuntu. So you can run it off the CD if you don’t want to install it right away.

I can’t use video/mic on Ubuntu 8.10, could it be a Gnash problem? Please help me, let’s say I want to migrate almost completely to Linux :D

Have you tried looking for an answer for your video/mic problems on the Ubuntu forums?

Diego, I am not sure, but I think that it is almost certain that the issue for you is gnash. I have used it for some months, even following their development efforts, but gnash is still not really ready for common usage. It is still highly experimental.

If you are using gnash because you want to use solely free software, then I advice you not to participate in edufire, since it would obligate you to use proprietary software.

If you are not that kind of radical guy, then you probably should install the proprietary version of the Flash plugin and verify whether that solves the mic/cam problem.
