Hey all!

In three weeks time, I’ll be bringing home a baby Shih Tzu!! Since I’m learning Japanese, I’d love to give it a cute Japanese name, and was wondering if any of you have any suggestions … what are your own pets’ names? What would you name a brand new puppy if you had one?

Yes, yes, Shih Tzu’s are Chinese, I know! So, if you know any cute Chinese names too, bring ‘em on! Actually, let’s have it open to any language, eh? And maybe we’ll all get some cute ideas and stories along the way.

I have a Shih Tzu! They are the best dogs ever! They are lots of fun and have tons of energy….so be aware! My dog’s name is Lula….My sister wanted to name it Lulu and my mom wanted to name it Lola so they combined both names and voila….LULA!

For some reason I’m thinking ‘kuro’, but that only works if he or she is black…. ^^;

Hachiko is the name of the famous dog immortalised in a statue in Shibuya. That might be good.

Xiao Bai is a pretty popular name for shih tzus! :D

20000-names.com is a good place to go for names, that’s where I usually get mine! They have alot of different names from different places and they have the meanings out beside them. My oldest cat is Akira (I just like that name ^^), my second one is Kichiro which means “lucky son”. We found him at the gas station so he was “lucky” we showed up, lol. And our new puppy is Roku, which is six. He’s our sixth animal (we also have 3 hermit crabs). Have fun naming the new pup!

Michael, your mention of Hachiko immediately made me think of Jeff Koons’s puppy for some reason …. until I looked him up. Ha ha, nothing like.
We used to have a Lhasa named Kismet …. so I’m thinking maybe something that begins with ‘K’….

I cannot write that in Japanese (mine is less than basic….), but since dogs don’t like to eat hot food, you could call the puppy neko jita (cat tongue) that in Japanese is used for those who can’t eat anything hot.
Uhm, maybe the puppy won’t like it….

Oh,i remembered when i was choosing a name for my dog it is golden rotriver named Billy and i name him because of a cartoon film named Bill and sebastian and my elder son looked like the boy in the cartoon…..my point is:name your pet a name related to something in your life even if you name him a name explains your feeling when you first met him.good luck with your pet.

The popular names for puppies in Japan are names like, “momo” (peach or peach blossom), “sakura” (cherry blossom), “hana” (flower), and “lucky”.
I personally like a very traditional Japanese name for my pets, like “daigorou” and “shinnosuke”. But my friends laugh at me for naming my pets with old-aged-people-names. :D

Nao, for a name like “shinnosuke”—it’s beautiful but it’s also kind of long! I can just imagine, “here, shinnosuke, heeere shinnosuke!” ha, I’d be exhausted!! Do you have nicknames?
