Very interesting story.

How ironic that the book was Orwell’s 1984. Gives interesting thought about how censorship could work in the digital age.

IIRC, there was an uproar about a year ago because the Kindle’s license allowed this. It seems that Amazon owned the product (and hence could dispose of it according to their discretion) even if you paid for it.

Getting back to the kid: Maybe if he showed his teacher the article on Wall Street Journal the story might hold a bit more water. It sounds like the kid got the underlying message which maybe as important as a summary of every 100 pages.
