I’ve been friends with eduFire founder Jon Bischke for longer than eduFire has existed. When he talked about his ideas and his passion for creating an educational platform that was democratic and open, I loved hearing about it. It is even more rewarding to see it built.

And yet I’ve carried a certain amount of guilt, because from the moment he started it he started bugging me to teach on it. And I haven’t.

My expertise is knowing how to understand a business, knowing how to invest. After all, I’m an investment manager, and I’ve been studying how great investors invest for many years. Buffett, Klarman, Munger, Lynch, Zell, etc., have all informed my understanding of what you do, and what you don’t.

But it’s scary, as an investment manager, to give away your insights. After all, it’s a superior understanding of the market that is the distinction between success and failure.

Yet after much deliberation, I think the time has come. All of the greatest investors, the ones I really respect, shared their thought process to some significant extent with the world. Buffett, Graham, Lynch, Klarman, all have written letters or books, or talked to students.

So now I’m speaking to a class on eduFire, today, at 5pm. I’m giving away knowledge it took me considerable thought and time to acquire, for free, for the joy of teaching.

There you go Jon. Thanks for making it possible, and sorry it took me so long.

It was a great class and I sincerely hope to hear more from you, Ranjit. I’m fitting in everything I’m hearing with my current projects – Sun Tzu’s ‘The Art of War’ and similar things; knowing your environment, your core business, and your strengths and weaknesses seems to be truly indispensable. I just wish I had the money to do investing, but one must start somewhere. :) Thanks, it was a great session.

Actually, Ranjit, the risk of divulging that information was likely less than most people think. Knowing the techniques is the easy part; however, following them persistently and intelligently often requires more time, effort, and self-discipline than most people are prepared to invest.
