There are many people who’d like to start a career in teaching English abroad, but don’t know where to start!

I’d love to take a class that teaches you step by step everything there is to know about working abroad. (work visas, housing, agencies, ect.)

Valerie, that’s a really good idea. I’m sure there are a lot of details to take care of with these teaching abroad positions.

to everyone interested in teaching abroad; Egypt, Spain, and most of the third world countries are in dire need of native English(Americans)speakers, but it is kind of adventure, you will have to travel to one of those countries on your own, and apply here and there in different private language institute (i am running one myself), and you will get an excellent salary, and it is a great cultural experience. i have many American friends who did just that, and they are teaching in Spain, Egypt, Jordan, and other countries. good luck to all explorers, travelers and adventurers

Hello everyone…. really think this would be great class to teach so I worked today on making a lesson flow. I posted it in the forum at :

http://edufire.com/forums/9-classes/topics/3816-teaching-abroad-class

If this sounds interesting and people would like to join just let me know. Btw, I like to hold a free orientation class before I accept any students to ensure that it will be beneficial to everyone. I hope that someone finds this interesting……

Hopefully one of those times will work. I put the student limit at 5 so people would be able to ask questions.

hi, i will be away in beijing this weekend so can’t attend your seminar, but i have been teaching English in China for 5 years, so if anyone has any questions about coming to china, feel free to ask. Remember every country is different, so there is no one set of rules or guidelines when looking to teach abroad.

cheers
kris

Very true, I would like to talk to you about the China situation. This class will only be about teaching in South Korea, which is definitely its own can of worms.

Actually, each European country has its own teachers’ requirements and procedures to select English teachers!

For instance, in Italy all language teachers alike must possess at least a M.A. in the subject they’re going to teach; while in France a B.A. in any subject would be enough to teach English:-)

Also, if willing to teach long term as a civil servant in a French or Italian school you must pass a very competitive “concours”. Again the requirements are different from a country to another : in France, for instance, most part of this “concours” must be passed in French; thus applicants must possess French native speakers’ oral and written skills (which makes passing the “concours” almost impossible for English native speakers :-(). On the contrary, in Italy the whole concours will be in English (which is a certain advantage for foreigners of course;-)).

Of course, teaching short term in private language schools (such as the British Institute and similar) is much easier :-) However, for those schools too, holding a TOEFL is a must in most European countries (I.E. Italy) and absolutely useless in France (where they require their French specific qualifications).

To be short :D, each language teacher may create a class with specific information for each country. It would be very interesting & useful I think;-)

Katia

P.S. By the way, if someone is interested to learn more about France and/or Italy possibilities for ESL teachers I would be happy to put up a class:-) But I have to be sure you’re joining! Thus, if interested please sent me a MP;-)

There are some private institutes where no degree is mandatory, I think.
Experience is obviously welcome.
I even heard of some institutes where you teach your mother tongue so you can learn other languages free of charge, here in Frankfurt.
I’d like to know the chances to teach Italian in the Japanese market without a degree, but with a lot of experiences with proof editing, writing, some translations and so on. I know a lot of people who have a degree in translation or in Japanese language, who are Italian native, but gain less than the half of the minimum amount of money to get a job visa.
With English it’s different. It’s far way more simple to find a job there.
