Hello to everyone who has taken the time to open my topic.

My name is Greg. Currently living in Scotland, more specifically the central belt of Scotland (not the best – I know). I’m 18 at University, and I have a fascination with Far Eastern countries, and their cultures.

I found this site in need of learning Japanese, as my University does not offer it. I understand how popular Japanese is currently becoming, so I think it will be a good thing to learn Japanese alongside my non-related degree at Uni. I will hopefully be able to study abroad, which would help my Japanese so much more if I did.

I have not currently enrolled in any lessons, but I have a tutor in mind, and we have discussed things. Which means when I get a microphone and headset, things will be ready to begin.

Anyway, that’s me as it stands currently, nice to meet you guys.

Take care,

Greg

Oh I see! I have lived here all my life too. I also have to confess that I have never been to Scotland!! Yes, it is warmer for sure, especially as I am in the south-east. We hardly ever get snow.

Hi Greg, no kidding cold! My husband and I visited Scotland (Edinburgh, Sterling, St Andrews, area) in Feb a couple of years ago….in a given day it went from rain to sleet to snow and then back again. Still I loved every minute! Good luck on learning Japanese.

Conversational Japanese is a little bit easier than the Japanese characters profoundly imprinted in every produce of Japan. I don’t know if Japanese newspapers and magazines use Romanized characters. Well, I myself still study Conversational Japanese. Keep studying this great language.

Welcome Greg! Japanese is great, and you are correct…it seems to be VERY popular these days. We have many tutors here that specialize in Japanese….so I know you will find a great tutor to assist you.

One day I want to make it out to Scotland, hopefully one day soon. Anything that I must see or visit while I’m there?

Good luck with your studies.

If you’re a sucker for scenery, go to the highlands. They have many guided walks around popular areas, and some of the scenery is amazing.

For shopping, central Glasgow is where you’ll want to be, plus the biggest cinema in Europe is in Glasgow as well.

Edinburgh is full of age old buildings from the victorian age, and a lot of Edinburgh consists of obscure passage ways, that detract from the main streets. Those passage ways are very narrow and usually contain a pub/bar or a cafe/restaraunt some way along it’s path. Walking around Edinburgh at night has a certain atmosphere to it, not sure which kind of atmoshpere, but there is one that is different to the norm. Also Edinburgh hosts these controversial ghost walks, in which people have claimed to come out with scars and bruises. I have tried it myself, spent the whole hour walking about Edinburgh, and the last 10 minutes was inside a “tomb” (Note: a small concrete room closed off by a metal gate.), nothing happened except a man jumped out in a monkey suit, no joke. Biggest waste of money ever. Therefore, avoid the ghost walk.

Hi Greg and welcome to edufire. I’m in Baltimore, Maryland and it’s cold here too but I don’t think it is as cold as Scotland.

Enjoy the edufire community.

Welcome Greg! I have fond memories of Scotland. It was there that I learned what a spiggot is. Silly me, I always thought it was called a faucet!
