I’m very interested in using language “chatterbots” – artificially intelligent robots on the computer that students can talk to and practice English with (when not learning in class). There are a number out there. Have you ever used one? What do your students think, or you? I designed one where students don’t have to type. They just select the question or reply and can have an endless conversation by clicking. Typing is a big problem for second language learners so I think my idea will help…. http://eflclassroom.com/bot.html David |

I like the concept. I use to work for a startup where I created a prototype to teach TOEFL using our avatar technology. I definitely think there is a place and need for this type of technology. I use to use SitePal for teaching ESL. My students (adults) thought it was cute but were more interested in talking to me via Skype. I think your idea would work well with children. I’m interested in technology like this. I work with technology in my full-time job. |

Cool stuff and Dave is cute. I agree with Alan regarding this type of technology is welcome but that right now it looks more apealing to the younger audience. It’s funny though when Dave-bot asked me ’what is the advantage to be ….(my age)?" It got me thinking…. : ) |

Hee hee! I asked Dave if he wants to come and teach here at eduFire and he said he will. He also said he’s single, so ladies, get ready for one cute robot! :) |

Yeah, I think it would be great homework. Students could interview Dave and then copy/paste and print. Bring to class and then “perform” the interview for the class. One student Dave and one student the interviewer. So I hope more people find Dave. I took a lot of time to get the automatic entry, so necessary to by pass the typing problem for 2nd language learners. I will also shortly make a more advanced version, with more advanced questions and replies. If I get a chance today, I’ll send some links to the original mind behind AIML and AI Dr. Wallace. thanks for taking a look. David |

PS. Dave calls people by the last active name. I have a suspicion that someone called “judge” is busy with students using him. Me thinks….. |
