Name the Hindi movie that you saw recently and what did you like about it? |
As I stated in another thread, the only two I have seen recently and have paid attention to the movie is Mughal-e-azam and Virruddh. Before I saw many Bollywood movies from rented CDs just for the music. I am trying to get to the point where I can watch these two without subtitles. My latest complaint is how fast they are talking. I didn’t notice that before. Both have good stories and are much more than the boy-meets-girl plot that Bollywood seems to be famous for. I have been doing a little research into Mughal-e-azam and am fascinated by what I’ve learned about the history of the Mughal empire, Akbar’s approach to religion. I remember when I noticed that Akbar prayed to Allah for a child and celebrated Krishna’s birth. Virruddh is an enjoyable story, I enjoy the way the characters are developed (like the religiousness of the mechanic across the street) and I think Amitabh did a wonderful job. Note: I swear I saw his white goatee in almost every one of those movies I rented. |

Amitabh is a great actor and has given number of superhit movies. Has any one watched ‘Black’ ? What are your views on it? [Dave may be you will also like that movie, do let me know after you have seen it] |

Devdas! ….Loved it….even though it was looong, i loved it….which for me, says something. not sayin everybody & they (their) mama is gonna like it. just sayin, “I loved it!” More specific, yet very brief commentary: bright, colorful w/ traditional themes, dancing, garb (clothing), and a range of highs & lows. …my kind of hindi movie. |

Yes Jamila, that is a good movie, and I like the songs too, they have deep meaning and lovely lyrics and dance. Have you watched any other movies of Sanjay Leela Bhansali? He makes some very good movies, Black is one of his movies too and there are others also, one that comes to mind right now is ‘Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam’ it is a love story, may be you will find it good. |

not sure if i’ve seen another of his movies. but!, i’ll keep those in mind. :) sometimes i get together with some folks for what i’ll call ‘international movie night’, and we’ve been wanting to get an indian movie in. so, thanks for the suggestion! =) |

Jamila do let me know when you have watched another movie if you liked it or no. I would like to see some more members replying to this topic :) |

i’ve seen 1 or 2 others but don’t know the names….but one of them was most likely a movie w/ Shah Rukh Kahn….so far, he’s my fav. Indian actor. |

Don- Like the bad SRK |

Jumada good to know that you have watched these movies, I was surprised at the last name….it is a very old one….!!! Have you watched any other movies of Rajesh Khanna? He has given many hit movies. |

I know some of the music from Don and Kal Ho Na Ho and I what I’ve heard. Yeh Mera Dil Yaar Ka Divana, Kal Ho Na Ho, and Time to Disco are in my library. Singh is King, isn’t that the one with Snoop Dogg? It looks like Will Smith really broke the tides here and hiphop stars are recognizing the value of Bollywood. It’s amazing they didn’t before. I have Elaan part 1,2,3,4,10. I really liked what I saw and one of these day’s I’ll take the time to download the rest. The 1st 1/2 of the movie is fascinating— I haven’t watched the last part yet. |

Welcome – that was the funniest movie that I have seen in quite some time! Suniel Shetty and (i can’t remember the guy’s name who played his older bhai), and the actor who played Akshay’s uncle – they were hysterical…. I’ve got Heroes on my list for this evening. Hope I get to watch it finally… I haven’t seen Black, but i’ve heard it’s gotten great reviews. Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam – that’s the one with Salman Khan, Aish Rai and Helen right? I’ve seen that one – it’s funny, it’s sad, but i think she made the right choice in the end… i was rooting for Ajay Devgan anyway… LOL |

You are interested in Bollywood ,sounds great……… |

Yes Susmita, Hindi movies are popular in many countries. :) Though this is not related to movies but definitely to India, check out this video |
Yes I saw their performance price dance group , they are just fabulous |

oh, i am a huge bollywood fan…. I actually have a degree in anthropology – focus on middle east and south asia religion and culture… i’m trying to find someone to teach me hindi here in Pittsburgh, but i haven’t had that much luck yet… i’ve found lots of classes for kids, so i’m about to just call them and ask if i can join the kids… LOL |
@ Elizabeth you are most welcome to attend my Hindi classes here. Check my profile page for classes that are coming up. It seems you have watched a number of them :) would you like to name your favorite actors from the ones that you have watched so far? Have you seen any old Hindi movies? Did you like them or do you prefer the new ones? |
ugh…. i spent all that time typing an answer and the system locks up and i lost the whole thing…. well, i guess i shorter version is probably better anyway… If you have classes at night, i would definitely be interested. Favorite Actors – the usual – Old vs new movies – the newer movies are easier for me to relate to and i find the humor actually funny, but sometimes the old ones are better, such as Umran Jao – the old one is soooooo much better than the new version. Wow – i have just realized that i am a total bollywood junkie… LOL |

This is a very educational thread :) I’m a novice to Bollywood movies: anyone care to give recommendations of intro Bollywood movies/ a must see variety list? |
An intro list – a couple of good ones if you are new to the genre…. To start off easy something like Masti, Welcome, Salaame Ishq, I See You, Chalte Chalte, Monsoon Wedding, Munna Bhai MBBS, Don, Bluffmaster…. If those get you hooked or you just want something a bit more thoughtful try Veer Zaara, Devdas, Rang de Basanti, Sarkar (be warned there is no song and dance in this one). Now I’m a bit biased to the movies I like, but I think most would say this is a good start. Anyone have any others to add??? |
@ Wren, I would be able to add to the list given by Elizabeth but it would be better if I knew what genre of movies you like. @ Elizabeth that was a long post about actors, :) and yes the correct spelling is ‘Umrao Jaan’, surely the old one with Rekha is much better. Any one watched the video links I posted above? |
@Elizabeth – thank you for a nice variety! I should start queing them up in my Netflix list!! I have seen “Monsoon Wedding” (liked it 6 out of 10), though strictly/probably not Bollywood, liked Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (also 6 out of 10), loved both Water (I’d give a 8.5 out of 10) and ofcourse Slumdog Millionare (also 8.5 out of 10) to give an idea. |
Every one should see the you tube links Swana gave in one of her above posts, just watch them.We will like them. @ Elizabeth ,you gave such a long list, even I watched all of them but if you would ask I could not remember all ,it means you are really like and enjoy Bollywood movies, |
@Wren according to your choice I would say you definitely watch the ones given by Elizabeth and ‘Veer Zaara’ [it is a love story], ‘Devdaas’ [another love story], ‘Rang de Basanti’ – a very good movie, ‘Sarkaar’ also good. |

Kal ho naa ho – great movie, I forgot about that one. I own most of the movies I listed, so don’t be that impressed…. Lol. I have to depend on the subtitles, but strangely enough I’ve gotten to the point where in some movies i can tell that the subtitles are not completely correct. I find that funny since I can’t speak or really understand the language… I seem to be picking up bits and pieces thru the movies. |
