We invite you to discover or re-discover some of the best classics of French cinema.
Come and share your passion of cinema! From classics to contemporary movies, we will talk and share our love and admiration for actors, directors, and of course movies!!!
I am thinking of opening a “Introduction to screen writing” class.
4 classes, once a week to cover the ground.
Of those who attend, I will offer 3 or 4 a unique chance to embark in a second round of classes, maybe 7, in which we will be writing a feature film comedy, based on a kick-ass idea of mine. Each student would obtain a writer co-credit of the finished script if they finish the classes.
What do you think of the idea?
There is a film group now on Edufire!

Joyce, I am glad you enjoyed “Le diner de cons”! I am also excited to know that Netflix does carry “Pierrot le fou”…I will go and upload it to my computer right now! Thanks for the tip!
François Truffaut is probably my favorite filmmaker of all time. In his short life he created so many wonderful works, including “La Nuit américaine.” I’m especially partial to the Antoine Doinel series.
A screenwriting class might appeal to a lot of folks here. I, alas, am no artist so that wouldn’t be something I would enroll in. Try raising the topic on the Forum and see if there’s any interest…
By the way, I am a filmmaker, and I am considering giving Screenwriting 101 class, what do you think of that?
Another “old” French classic is “La nuit américaine” , from François Truffaut. A masterpiece! In English, “Day for Night” .
I can’t believe Netflix has Pierrot Le Fou !
Hahaha…well not only does Netflix have “Pierrot le Fou”, you can watch it instantly on your computer! I vaguely remember seeing this movie many years ago (bien sur, avant que tu étais née), but now I’m going to take another look.
As for “Le dîner de cons”, I just watched it and I have to say, you are so right. It is hilarious! It gets you right from the first moment and ends much too soon! I watched it with subtitles but may try it again so I can listen more carefully to the French. A couple of language observations/questions —
I was telling my husband about this film and he thought there might be an American version of it. Turns out there is one in the works, due to be released July 2010 starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. The title? “Dinner for Schmucks”!! Now in English ‘schmuck’ is pretty vulgar (I hope they come up with a better title before they release the film); it is a Yiddishism which is a slang reference to the male member but in English is used to mean ‘jerk’ or ‘idiot’. How rude is the word ‘con’ in French?
I noticed that the English subtitles changed ‘Marlène Sasseur’ to ‘Marlène Hissister’ to try to keep the phone joke intact (Who is this? Marlene, his sister!) Of course, ‘Hissister’ doesn’t quite work as a surname in English!
On the other hand ‘Juste LeBlanc’ works juste fine, without any tinkering.
Bien sur, Godard…un classique! Et Belmondo bien entendu, superbe acteur…! Bon film mais pas très récent! Je crois même que je n’étais pas encore née! J’aimerais bien le revoir mais je doute que Netflix le fournisse! lol
nope Pierre-Alex. It is a movie group…lol
So, what is your favorite French actor and/or actress and which movies have you seen that we could talk about?
“le diner de cons” was a good one. Anything else?
Oh, by the way, anyone has seen LE PETIT NICOLAS, the movie?
www.lepetitnicolas.com
I teach a class with him. :-)
Is this more an Alain Delon group? lol
How about Michel Blanc? Do you know him?
I can’t wait for you to tell us what you thought of the movie! If there is anything you have trouble understanding just let me know, I’ll be glad to help!
As for Delon, wasn’t he absolutely gorgeous! He is almost 75 years old now, but he is part of this glamorous generation of actors that will live forever in our mind!
Salut les gars!
I just watched the video of Alain Delon and I loved it! I requested “Le dîner de cons” from Netflix after reading your posts, Mel and Pierre-Alex. Can’t wait to see it!
Chers tous,
Check out this video of “Le diner de cons”…sorry no subtitles!
The music of this clip is from Georges Brassens, very famous French singer!
“Le diner de cons” (The Dinner Game), what a funny movie that was!!! I am laughing just remembering it :0)
Netflix has it. I would highly recommend this movie. Hilarious!
Thierry Lhermitte is fabulous and Jacques Villeret is at the top of his game in this movie. Sadly he passed away 4 years ago.
Did anyone else besides Pierre-Alex have seen it?
Here is the synopsis of this movie:
“A group of French intellectuals gathers each Wednesday night for a dinner game, in which the challenge is to bring along the most idiotic guest. Pierre (Thierry Lhermitte) thinks he’s found a ringer in François (Jacques Villeret), a civil servant whose passion is making architectural models out of matchsticks. But Pierre gets more than he bargained for when François becomes his houseguest.”
Hi Joyce and Lala,
Welcome this the group.
Did you have the chance to watch this youtube clip of Alain Delon? What do you think of it?
Here is one of my favorite French actors and also an icon in France. Very controversial, some would say ego-maniac!
I simply think he is a superb actor. I attached this video of him, the pictures are a wonderful retrospective to his life and to his films.
Plus the music of this clip is beautiful. He is singing with famous singer Dalida who was one of his good friends!
Have you seen any of his movies? What did you think?
