A group to gather people interested in studying a different type of language: the ones computers can understand!
Ever wanted to ask your computer to do something for you, but didn’t know how? Here you can start your journey to learn programming, or just get an answer for a simple question.
All programming languages are welcome.

Yes, I’m still around, and I still teach HTML, CSS, and PHP on edufire, so if you’re wanting to learn one of those things, please let me know. I currently work freelance as a web developer, and I’ve been doing PHP for 8+ years now.
I teach ActionScript 3.0! And, in fact, and teaching a FREE introductory class on Flash and ActionScript next week:

Would love to learn more about OOP in PHP (especially how to utilize frameworks like Zend/CakePHP/CodeIgnitor), Java, and/or C++.
I’d definitely be willing to pay a tutor who could help me build some kind of advanced OOP PHP webapp.
Don’t forget to check out my class that is an introduction into PHP; If all goes well I will be providing more classes on other languages such as C++ & Java;
Class link is:

Hello i am new to this group and i would like to gain a skill in computer language programming mainly in Blitzplus or java c++
Just saw this funny post: 10 Reasons PHP is still better than Ruby
Check out my Ruby on Rails class on Thursday!
Rox, what do you want to do with programming? Games? Apps? Tools? Many factors decide which language you should use.
For games I recommend Gamemaker, its slow and inefficient but that just forces you to learn better programming habits.
For Apps and Tools, C# works wonders, as well as python.
C++ would be too hard for beginners, but a very powerful tool once mastered.
Rox: What do you want to learn? There are a VARIETY of different languages. (check out python, because it’s really easy and really fun)
Hi everyone i recently became interested in computer programming. i hope you can all give me a little help -
i’m totally new to this but i’m eager to learn >.<
Hello! I’m a computational linguist, working on a machine translation system in Ruby and learning/teaching human languages as a way to balance things.
I used to program in PHP, Perl, Java etc. but since 2006 I’ve done Ruby on Rails almost exclusively, because it gives me joy every time I code something and reflect how much more tedious it would have been in any of the other programming languages I know. Ruby on Rails typically needs a fifth of the lines compared to PHP and it’s still prettier. The framework is perfect for anything web 2.0, especially social networks of all kinds, but Rails doesn’t limit you to creating that kind of site. A lot of useful functionality ships with Rails (e. g. wrapping of SQL so you can do user.name or user.photos), but on the other hand you can make extensive use of meta-programming, overwriting any function, creating your own types of loops, whatever you can think of. It’s all open-source, too.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I can provide 1-on-1 tutoring for Ruby on Rails. I typically use a learning-by-doing approach: message me what type of website you’d like to build and we’ll build the skeleton of it together. I’ll teach you Ruby and Rails as we go along, taking care to elect simple tasks first and to always have executable code.
For those that currently do server-side languages for the web, I thought I’d mention the MVC design pattern. If you didn’t already know, it stands for Model/View/Controller, and it’s a system of structuring your code to make it modular and much easier to maintain and update.
You Python people should already know about Django, and if not, go get it. :)
For us PHP people, there are several frameworks, but I stay away from the ones that still work with PHP 4 as that is no longer supported. My MVC framework of choice right now is Zend Framework (and what better than the people responsible for PHP? :)) ZF is free, and if you’re interested in checking out, you can do so at http://framework.zend.com.
Greetings to everyone I haven’t met on here yet, and yes, I am still alive. :)
I do PHP, HTML, CSS, SQL (mainly MySQL, but looking into some SQLite), XML, and some XML transformation stuff, like XSL as well.
If anyone out there is interested in any of the above, please let me know.
Hello All,
I have 5 years experience programming in various languages, including C++, FORTRAN 90, Matlab, NCL, Cshell, and Bash. I am particularly proficient with Matlab, but can help you learn the basics of any of these.
Let me know if you are interested in learning any of these, and what specifically you would like to work on. I would be happy to organize some lessons and work with you to develop your skills.
Cheers,
Guillaume
Who here is learning, interested in learning or teaching C++? Please give me a message! I am currently trying to learn it, and would love to chat and share experiences and ask questions with others who want to learn it or knows it =)
I’ve got a question for anybody familiar with server-sider markup (PHP, ASP, JSP, ColdFusion). The goal to separate business logic from presentation seems overdone.
Over done in the sense that a worthwhile goal results in confusing and fragile code in PHP.
I found I’m trying to mimic the Java paradigm (if a snippet includes mostly logic it goes into a stored procedure in a servlet/PHP include and it is called by a one line snippet in the HTML file).
How do others handle this?
Tina
Have you looked at Scribus, the free open source Desktop Publisher, it might be way out of the expensive enforced upgrade.
@Vanessa: probably both, but I originally was thinking the mail reader. Thanx : )
Right now I am having issues. My laptop runs on Vista, and it came with a 30 free trial version of Microsoft Office. Well I have the full version, but it is older. My Publisher keeps crashing it is so annoying. I have to pay around $300 just to upgrade my version. What a rip. Sorry just had to vent
Hi Angela,
Are we talking about webmail or e-mail that you use a mail reader to get?
I just found this group, and lucky me, I’ll have to learn Visual Basic next semester. I’m a Management Info Systems Major, but I find it odd how I have friends that are close to graduating, but haven’t had a class that teaches SQL yet…
