45 minutes can be long. 30 minutes is enough time to get through a lesson.

Why is there such a big rift in sentiment over this issue over a total of 15 (fifteen) minutes? It doesn't seem like much. I don't see the problem with the current situation. I have not ever had a Superpass, however, leaving as it is would add incentive for students to buy a Superpass. The teacher could end the class early at his or her discretion. If anything, this seems like a step backwards in policy. I do not agree. Sorry.

""It doesn't seem like much." When I take a lesson which is well planned out, and paced for a student to whom that class is taught. it can be very intense and exciting to have a 15 minute lesson, from my own experience and view. That is how it seems like much to me.

"I don't see the problem with the current situation." For me the problem, with the way that it is implemented now is that... I as a student want a short effective lesson. that I really can be focused in and enjoy a lot because it doesn't drag out... Which is what I've seen happen.. And lesson content being dragged out should not be a default solution to this issue we have got, causing less benefit for us from superpass classes.

I'm a bit double-sided on this situation. I feel a bit biased because I thought and still think Nana is a fantastic teacher, and I think its a tremendous shame that such a great teacher decided to leave for this reason. I don't know if perhaps I'm misunderstanding the policy, but is that classes have to be set up for 45 minutes and if it ends 15 minutes earlier and the eduFire team finds out, the teacher is not allowed to teach again unless the class is extended and ? Or is it that the classes have to be set up for 45 minutes, but the teacher has leeway to do with the class as he/she pleases? If it is the former, I certainly agree that the policy needs to be a bit more flexible. However, if it is the latter, I don't understand the issue with setting the class for 45 minutes but ending it after 30 minutes. Just need some clarification!

The reason why I signed up for a Superpass is because I enjoyed NaNa's class. I was upset when she canceled her classes due to this rule. I think 45 min is quite long for most instructors if not many students turn up. Anyway, I canceled my Superpass subscription because there wasn't enough Japanese classes that suit my timing and also learning needs.

i think thirty minutes of class will give the teacher enough time to focus on her students especially if there's only a handful of them. i support this idea.

i'm with gabby, need to find or get clarification on this. will gladly give it 5 stars if we have to teach for 45 min. as i wanted to host shorter classes, too. glad u posted this and sent the message out, lauren. way to get things moving!

i agree because at school we have 45 minutes of classes and even here on edufire that is a long time and before i did attent a school with 30 minute classes and i must say to my experience i felt i learned a lot more on the school with 30 minute classes because teachers prepared there lessons wel and we did a lot of work in that time while i see the teachers i have now struggling to talk there way trough it or even tell us we have a few minutes to our selfs and i feel because they drag it on i dont remember it as fast as i normally would because its boring to hear the same over and over again i think a teacher on edufire should be able to choose between times expecialy if you only have a handfull of students as long as they find it to be enough ;)

30 minutes is a great amount of time. Especially if there are fewer students in a class. I am more comfortable with 30 minutes than 45 minutes.

I'm sure edufire has their reasons, which probably involve profits and returns. Why not have someone team-teach with Nana to fill in the remaining 15 minutes?

Why should there be a minimum? If you're paying for a Superpass you can take as many classes as you want!

Angela makes a good point.. maybe someone could team teach with the Nana... or maybe she could allow the students to converse and she monitor... I'm sure there could be a solution short of just giving up. I would like to see it be flexible where the minimum is 30 minutes and the teacher has a MAX of 60 min that way it would be up to the teacher's discretion For some subjects like language a shorter time is necessary.. with other things like theory or discussion more time is necessary. Overall I like that Jon has opted to let us pretty much do what we choose with very few rules.

Interesting points all around. I think it is important to note that the lower the minimum time limit for SuperPass classes, the lower the SuperPass payout will likely be (because shorter classes can be done more frequently). I'm not sure if that changes anyone's way of thinking about this but did want to mention this.

Thank you for the direct criticism, Quinsy. As I have yet to teach a one-to-one tutor class, perhaps I was misguided on this topic. I am perhaps not happy from the student perspective, however, as a tutor, I will go along with the consensus of the votes thus far.

On the note of classes being short.. Maybe superpass could be only for 1 to Many not available for 1 to 1. Also maybe there could be a minimum number of students for a class so that if say the class size is below 5 then the class will be canceled. that way the teacher is assured of at least a minimum number of students to make it interesting. Also maybe for language classes it could be shorter but with a maximum number of classes per month. It seems that all of this could be handled through the back end with some sort of soft ware that monitored and controlled to thwart abuse of the system. After all there is always the option of not teaching superpass. then i believe there is not a restriction on the time frame of your class.. am I correct here? Teachers must realize that the way to make money on the superpass is to attract more people to take your class and to attract more superpass subscribers to the site. Students must realize that if they enjoy the site it is up to you to spread the word and invite others so that the good teachers stay. Also.. be an active participant in your classes so that the teacher is not struggling to stretch the class out. It is a group effort, give and take... we must work together to have it be here for us all.

Ok I don't know about everyone else but I have so little time in my day that I think I would really enjoy small short and to the point lessons as long as the teacher was clear about how long their class was then I can't see what the problem is! short and sweet, gets my vote!

30 min minimum I think is a good compromise.

agreed. 30 minutes minimum is fair.

1. I understand that the kind of courses I teach (Business management, quality, processes) are still few in edufire, but I cannot imagine a class of less than one hour. 2. I don't see the reason why a class for one student would be shorter than a class for 50 if the content is the same. Again, language classes may be different.

My suggestion would be: 50 minutes (or 45) is generally accepted practice in academia. If you do decide to permit "mini-lectures" for half that time, but the charges to student and the payment to tutors should be halved as well. That would permit people interested in 'lunch break' Spanish etc to have a class and the tutors to feel the system is equitable.

i agree with Yoel, even though it is no longer available, and because of this it expalins why SuperPass is gone, who wants teachers cutting their classes, if there are people expecting 100 people and only 10 show up, don't they deserve the full-allotted amount of time~ i think some of the teachers here may have never learned the 3 ways of teaching in person: mentoring, tutoring, and teaching, itself... each is it's own unique side of teaching, one is helping someone get to where you are, being support and advice, one is 1:1, and the last being 1:??? when you teach on a smaller scale, the amount of knowledge that is retained is greater than when teaching to many. unfortunately, greed has gotten the better part of people's hearts instead of valor... valor is a true virtue in and of itself, try looking it up sometime, personal bravery, that says a lot doesn't it. being true to the few students instead of your coin purse is what makes a teacher or you are going with the motions, whatever is necessary to make a few dollars, which sadly, teaching should never be about!!
