Charles Perry

About Me

I am an American, 48 years old, and was a lawyer for 17 years in California before moving overseas. I have lived in France for over three years now, and teach both English and French. I play classical piano, and am passionate about politics and current events. I also am a constant learner myself, with an emphasis in foreign language, mathematics, and physics. I currently am working on my Spanish, German, and Korean. I am especially enjoying Korean, as it is my first non-European language. In addition, learning something about other languages always gives me insight on how to teach.

I teach English and French at all levels. My emphasis in English is business and legal English, improving vocabulary, and pronunciation. My students learning French generally focus on day-to-day conversation that arises when traveling and living in France, but some want grammar, and some want to learn a bit of French slang.

I have been teaching on-line for over a year now, and am constantly looking at how to use technology to improve distance, on-line education. It is, I believe, the unstoppable wave of the future.

As to my teaching style, I do not teach from a text unless a student specifically requests that I do so. I prefer (and believe it is more effective) to work with on-line readings and materials I have prepared myself. Each lesson tends to be different, with some focusing on grammar, others on vocabulary, and still others on conversation skills. All lessons, however, target what the student and I both believe the student need to improve. I also try to write each student a brief E-mail after the lesson to summarize what we covered and what I think we should cover next.
