The breton surname STEUNOU in France
STEUNOU is a surname born by one thousand people today in France and still very numerous in the Cotes d'Armor, "Shores of Armor" a french departement bearing the breton name of "Ar Mor" = "The sea".
STEUNOU fits exactly to the modern breton word AR STEUNVOU "the warps" a plural form that must be understood with the meaning of the english surname WEAVER.
The singular form of the breton word is AR STEUNV and we can find the same word in the modern welsh language but of course with a little different form and nevertheless with the same meaning, YSTOF "warp, threads and yarns on a loom for weaving or making ropes". In modern irish we have the word TAMHN but whith the different meaning "trunk of a tree", with a mobile initial S fallen nowadays.
It is not difficult to imagine that an ancestor being a warper, a weaver, has been the root of this surname. It is not surprising to find this name in great number in the Cotes d'Armor, a place very much settled by Celts from Great Britain in the Middle Ages when the Saxons invaded the island and took the place of the celtic tribes.
Front the point of view of etymology STEUNV / YSTOF / TAMHN is the same term as the latin STAMEN "thread" that gave rise to ETAMINE "web" in modern french and to STAMEN and STAMINA in modern english. Likewise the greek ancient word TO STEMA "the rope" is based on the same root STA- "to be standing" with the suffix -MEN "thing", that is to say *STAMEN "standing thing". This indo-european root + suffix can also be found in the english word STEM "standing part of a plant", written STEMN in ancient saxon. This suffix -MEN became now a simple -M in modern english, like in SEAM "sewn thing" completely connected to the verb TO SEW and to the greek HYMEN "membrane" but whose first meaning was in fact "seam" (initial H in greek marks an ancient initial S).
Research, text made by Patrick Jouannes.
About my family name (surname) : My exact surname is JOUANNÈS (with this french è) but this name originates from the river JOUANNE in western France. In French many place names have this ending -S and are connected to villages or towns based on a concrete substantive or meaning. It shows that a long time ago there was a village called JOUANNES (without this French è) on the river JOUANNE. One of my ancestors was certainly born in this now disappeared village and gave to his descent this name. The meaning of the river name JOUANNE is not mysterious anymore. It is the long evolution (2000 years long) of the Gaulic DIV ONNA "godly river". I must say I am very proud and happy to have this name :>) ASNIÈRES is another example "donkey place". SARCELLES "teal place". CASTRES "castle place". CHELLES "cell place". ARMENTIÈRES "cattle place". and so on...
